I've written previously about the eventualy transition from SMS to IM. It's finally becoming a reality with a company called Cherple. A Globaltel Media spin-off, Cherple allows for IM to SMS. The company eventually wants to connect the world’s 1.5 billion Internet users to the 3.3 billion wireless devices via an instant message-to-SMS platform.

I do not believe SMS will be around for long, especially when smart phones become the norm and applications are written which will elimiate SMS all together. Cherple is the beginning of the demise of SMS, in my opinion. Applications such as this will be very beneficial for use in interactive digital screen applications with mobile phones.
